So, the iPad has finally come out. Yes, I was one if those crazy apple fanboys who got up at 4:30am to wait in line at the Apple Store. During those four hours with other iPad thirsty apple fans, I learned a valuable lesson.
Apple did an amazing job turing what could have been a very boring wait into something much more – they turned it into an event. The manager came out bright and early to welcome us and thank us for coming. Then seven apple employees were sent out to to answer any questions about the iPad. They were just as excited for the device as we were and happily answered questions. They got everyone excited and talking about their favorite features. They handed out pastries and a drinks, pumped up the crowd and even sent all fifty employees screaming in a large mob to welcome us.
Then we all counted down as they dropped the curtains and let us have a peek inside the store. When it was finally time to go inside, they welcomed us cheering and clapping. Ok, what’s my point? Well, I could have slept in and gone at noon but I would have missed out on all the fun! This truly was more than a boring waiting line, it was an event. It was fun! I think more companies should take the hint from apple and starting asking how they can create memories and events, not just products. Hire magicians for plane rides? Outrageous costumes for dentists? The possibilities are endless! But what I am taking away from the night is this – Entertain people and make sure you are creating positive lasting memories.
